Job Description

The State of Utah Labor Commission has a vacant Elevator Inspector position open in the Boiler, Elevator, and Coal Mine Safety Division. **You will be assigned a state vehicle that is equipped with your virtual office. This position requires frequent in-state travel, may require out-of-town stays up to a week at a time, and occasional meetings at the office, and will be scheduled to work four 10-hour days per week.

As an Elevator Inspector, you will be responsible for jurisdictional inspection of elevators, escalators, wheelchair lifts, and other lift devices for compliance. Due to the minimal supervision of the position, we need a self-starter with high integrity. Within your first six months, you will be required to pass the State exam and eventually be required to pass the NAESA QEI examination.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIESRoles and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Scheduling and conducting inspections.
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards, and guidelines, etc.
  • Providing consultation, making recommendations, giving appropriate advice, and/or facilitating decisions.
  • Analyzing, summarizing, and/or reviewing data; reporting findings, interpreting results, and/or making recommendations.
  • Maintaining detailed inspection or investigation records, preparing reports, and attending to other related administrative requirements.
IDEAL CANDIDATE

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • 1+ years of training or experience in the construction, maintenance, repair, inspection, or testing of elevators, or equivalent or related equipment.
PREFERRED
  • A Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) certification.
  • Been trained in the construction, maintenance, repair, inspection, or testing of elevator equipment ("elevator personnel").
  • At least one year of experience performing inspections and performing or witnessing tests on elevator equipment.
  • Four years of verifiable documented experience in the mechanical and/or electrical aspects of the elevator industry.
  • A mechanical engineering degree, US Navy Engineering schooling for elevators, and/or two years of college courses in an elevator industry-related engineering field.
  • Experience or training with American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) codes and standards.

Qualifications

  • Successful applicants will be required to pass exams and become certified as a Utah Elevator Inspector within one (1) year.
  • A valid driver's license is required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA53-3-202(1)(a).
  • The ability to deal with people in a manner that shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
  • The ability to operate applicable safety equipment.
  • Knowledge of agency, professional, and/or industry standards and practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, and/or policies and procedures.
  • The ability to plan, organize, and prioritize time and workload in order to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines.
  • The ability to read, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, and/or procedures.
  • Knowledge of testing and/or examination methodologies.
  • The ability to speak before a group of people.
  • Employment requirements to sit for the NAESA Test (eventual requirement for position):
    • Four (4) years of verifiable documented education and experience in the mechanical and/or electrical aspects of the elevator industry, and is a person deemed to meet the A17.1 Code definition of "elevator personnel" and has at least one year's experience performing inspections and performing or witnessing tests as specified in A17.1 Sections 8.10 or 8.11 and A18.1. This year may be concurrent with the 4 years of experience. OR:
    • Two years of college courses in an elevator industry-related engineering field (Documentation of education is required.) AND at least one year's verifiable experience performing inspections and performing or witnessing tests as specified in A17.1 Sections 8.10 or 8.11 and A18.1. OR:
      • Meet the definition of "elevator personnel"** and have documented training AND at least one year's verifiable experience performing inspections and performing or witnessing tests as specified in A17.1 and A18.1 as one of the following:
      • An Elevator Inspector performing inspections for an enforcing authority, or
      • An Elevator Inspector trainee working under the direct supervision of an Elevator Inspector performing inspections for an enforcing authority, or
      • an Elevator Inspector performing inspections and licensed by or under the jurisdiction of an enforcing authority,
      • or an Elevator Inspector trainee licensed by or working under the direct supervision of a licensed Elevator Inspector performing inspections and working under the jurisdiction of an enforcing authority.
*NAESA's Executive Director may require a notarized affidavit, signed by the applicant, attesting to their experience or education history, if it is determined that all education/experience has been in situations where documentation was not required or where documentation cannot be produced.

**A person deemed to meet the A17.1 Code definition of "elevator personnel" described as: "Persons who have been trained in the construction, maintenance, repair, inspection, or testing of equipment."

***The term, "elevator industry-related engineering field", means that the academic contents of formal technical courses, or equivalent technical education, taken to achieve academic competency forms the requisite technical knowledge to design, analyze, or test mechanical, structural, electrical, electro-mechanical, or computer engineering components, or systems relating to the vertical transportation field.

Must be able to enter confined spaces as defined in OSHA standards. May be required to perform inspections in a variety of uncomfortable locations due to placement within the facility.
