Job Summary
The Secondary History/Government Teacher is responsible for developing a rigorous and engaging
secondary-level instructional program and a classroom environment that promotes learning, critical
thinking, and civic responsibility. The teacher establishes effective rapport with students,
motivates students to develop required historical knowledge, analytical skills, and informed
citizenship, and fosters positive relationships with parents, colleagues, and the broader school
community.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and
responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform
job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
1. Teaches secondary-level history, government, civics, and related social studies courses
utilizing the course of study approved by the district.
2. Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and
administrative regulations and procedure of the school district.
3. Develops, evaluates, and translates lesson plans and instructional materials into
individualized and small group learning experiences that adapt the curriculum to the needs of each
student.
4. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning
atmosphere in the classroom.
5. Evaluates students' academic and social growth, maintains records, and prepares progress
reports.
6. Communicates with parents, counselors, and students through conferences and other means to
discuss progress and interpret the school program.
7. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and
helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
8. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the
district and self-selected professional growth activities.
9. Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records;
identifies and utilizes community instructional resources.
10. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.
11. Participates in curriculum development programs and faculty committees and sponsors student
activities.
12. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for educational assistants, student teachers, and
volunteers.
13. Enforces the Board's policy on equal educational opportunity and advises the Board on
instructional policy and resource development necessary for meeting system-wide goals and
objectives.
14. Represents the school and community positively, maintains cordial relationships with the home,
parents, etc.
15. Performs such other duties as may reasonably be prescribed by the principal.
16. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
• A Bachelor's degree in history, government, social studies education, or a related field, with
experience working with secondary-level students.

Required Licenses or Certifications
• Valid Tennessee teaching certificate with appropriate endorsements for secondary history and
government.

staff members and participation in school-wide initiatives will be essential to ensure a cohesive
educational experience for all students.
• Regular assessment of student progress and implementation of individualized support plans will
be key components of the teacher's responsibilities. The teacher will be responsible for creating a
safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning space that encourages exploration and academic curiosity.
