Who We Are And What We Do
The Tennessee Department of Correction operates and oversees 14 adult prisons across the state, housing some 21,000 offenders. In the community, TDOC supervises 79,000 offenders on probation, parole, or community corrections. The department operates 44 probation/parole offices in 13 districts across the state.
Job Overview
The Director oversees daily operations and investigations of the Contraband Interdiction Unit (CIU). The CIU is part of the Office of Investigations and Conduct (OIC). This position reports to the Director of OIC and has oversight of Special Agents who possess statewide law enforcement authority to conduct complex internal and criminal contraband investigations.
Key Responsibilities
- The CIU Unit Director leads a state-wide team of Special Agents including Special Agents in Charge (SAC) of each region.
- Oversees investigations with a criminal contraband nexus, which includes special operations and searches at TDOC facilities.
- Regularly provides operations status briefs and collaborates with TDOC stakeholders. Compiles data and produces statistical reports.
- Attends statewide meetings pertaining to committees and task forces targeting contraband issues with a TDOC nexus.
- Assists other TDOC entities and external law enforcement agencies by providing information, collaborating intel, and assisting in investigations related to TDOC interests.
- On call 24 hours, 7 days a week; nights, weekends, holidays, overnight stays; must respond immediately to major crimes and incidents, including unexpected overtime and potential overnight trips.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of experience as a police officer, correction, or probation/parole officer.
- Experience in a law enforcement leadership, managerial, or supervisory capacity.
- Experience performing or instructing in criminal investigation work in a government setting, law enforcement, professional criminal law, and/or similar related field may substitute for the required education on a year for year basis.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen, 21 years of age, and possess a valid Tennessee driver's license at the time of hire.
- Must successfully pass a structured interview, meet medical and psychological qualifications, and complete a background check.
- Must be willing to and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons. Candidates must be or willing to become POST compliant.
- Must participate in pre-employment, random and all other drug and substance abuse testing as required by departmental policies and procedures.
