Principal Mechanical Engineer
BAE Systems, Inc.—one of the world's largest defense contractors and a Fortune 500 Company—seeks a well‑rounded Mechanical Engineer to support design, construction, and commissioning of modernization and new construction projects at Holston Army Ammunition Plant, Kingsport, TN. The position works a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off and follows a hybrid approach that provides on‑site collaboration and remote flexibility.
Responsibilities
- Conduct mechanical engineering and technical tasks to support design, construction, and commissioning of multi‑million dollar modernization programs, including planning, design, analysis, and engineering inputs for chemical plant facilities.
- Translate chemical engineers' process flow diagrams into mechanical equipment specifications that meet required temperature and pressure ranges.
- Provide technical oversight during field installation and commissioning of equipment.
- Work with a cross‑disciplinary team to perform plant and project engineering, select construction materials, write specifications, supervise and prepare mechanical drawings, control cost, and manage work to meet project schedules.
- Perform mechanical engineering analyses for steam, hydraulic, pumping/piping, HVAC, machinery design and layout, process cooling/heating, storage tanks, vessel design, and inspections.
- Conduct inspections of existing facilities to determine integrity and safety and recommend modifications.
- Support development of construction‑phase plans and schedules ensuring availability of materials, equipment, and personnel.
- Ensure work conforms to plans, specifications, construction practices, and cost constraints during execution.
- Create detailed project proposals, scopes of work, and estimates.
- Review and approve design packages from suppliers and design firms, providing constructability input.
- Execute commissioning plans and maintain documentation.
- Consider safety in all aspects of work and design.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a closely related degree).
- Minimum 6+ years of related experience in design, construction, and commissioning.
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards.
- Working knowledge of 3D design/modeling.
- Experience in at least two of the following areas: pipe stress analysis, tank and vessel design/fabrication/inspection, machine design/fabrication, pump/piping system design, commissioning plan execution.
- Self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, and able to work in a team environment.
- Capability to meet deadlines while handling multiple tasks.
- Ability to create scopes of work and estimates.
- Capability to direct design teams and external design firms.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project).
Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
- Experience in design and construction of chemical manufacturing facilities handling acids, bases, and solvents for energetic materials.
- Professional Engineering License.
- Pipe Stress Analysis using Caesar II.
- Finite Element Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics (Caesar II).
- Piping isometric drawing reviews to P&IDs.
Pay Information
Full‑Time Salary Range: $94,728 – $161,038. Individual salaries depend on business considerations, local market, internal equity, and candidate qualifications.
