Automation Technician


The ideal candidate will have a strong electrical and mechanical background with significant, hands-on experience maintaining and programming Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) in a heavy industrial setting.


🔑 Key Responsibilities


  • Troubleshooting & Repair: Diagnose and repair complex electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems using schematics, multimeters, and specialized tools. Quickly restore automated production lines and metal processing equipment to full operation.
  • PLC Systems Management:
  • Perform routine backups, modifications, and programming changes to PLC and HMI systems to optimize cycle times and improve machine reliability.
  • Strong ability to read, interpret, and modify existing PLC ladder logic.
  • Required: Proven, hands-on experience with PLC platforms.
  • Preferred: Expertise with Allen Bradley (Rockwell Automation) and Siemens PLC hardware and software.
  • Preventative Maintenance (PM): Execute scheduled PM tasks on automation and control systems to prevent unplanned downtime, focusing on critical metals processing equipment like presses, furnaces, and material handling systems.
  • System Upgrades & Integration: Assist in the design, installation, and commissioning of new automated equipment and control panels, ensuring seamless integration with existing manufacturing processes.
  • Documentation & Training: Maintain accurate records of all maintenance work, program changes, and system configurations. Provide technical guidance and training to other maintenance personnel on automated systems.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, electrical safety standards (NFPA 70E), and quality control protocols.


🎯 Required Qualifications


  • Education: Associates Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology, Automation, Industrial Maintenance, or a related technical field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of professional experience as an Automation, Controls, or Maintenance Technician in a heavy industrial or manufacturing environment (metals, automotive, or heavy machinery preferred).
  • PLC Proficiency: Demonstrated experience in the troubleshooting and programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). Must be able to go online with a processor, force I/O, and understand program flow for diagnostic purposes.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency with industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of motor controls, VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), and servo systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics and blueprints.


✨ Preferred Skills & Experience


  • In-depth, hands-on experience with Allen Bradley (Logix 500/5000) and/or Siemens (Step 7/TIA Portal) control systems.
  • Experience with Human Machine Interface (HMI) and SCADA systems development or modification.
  • Background in metals manufacturing, welding, forging, casting, or other heavy fabrication processes.
  • Knowledge of robotics programming and maintenance.
