Job Summary
The Physical Plant - Power House Operations Department at East Tennessee State University (ETSU), located in Johnson City, TN, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Boiler Operator 2.
This role is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and servicing of boiler systems to support campus facilities. Duties include:
- Monitor gauges and controls to ensure boilers operate within required parameters.
- Adjust valves and regulators to control steam or water flow.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of boilers and related equipment.
- Conduct regular inspections to ensure safe and efficient operation. Perform daily chemical testing to maintain proper water treatment levels.
- Troubleshoot and resolve equipment malfunctions.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the boiler plant and surrounding areas.
The ideal candidate will have experience in boiler operations, demonstrate strong attention to detail, and maintain a commitment to safety and operational efficiency.
Employees in this class work under general supervision and must be available to work any assigned shift or schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Overtime may be required based on operational demands. As part of the Facilities team, this position is considered essential personnel and may be required to report to work during emergency closures or inclement weather conditions to perform critical duties, including snow and ice removal.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Knowledge of boiler operation and repair.
- Ability to service and maintain pipes, valves and gauges on boilers.
- Ability to maintain boiler operations at the desired level.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to read/comprehend.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations.
Required Qualifications - Experience in boiler operations.
- Valid Driver's License required and maintained during incumbency.
Preferred Qualifications - High school diploma or equivalent
- Three (3) or more years' experience working with high-pressure steam boilers, heating systems, or industrial mechanical systems.
- Additional certifications are beneficial based on facility needs
Salary $24.10 an hour
