This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Chief Financial Officer oversees and manages all general financial affairs, analysis, investments, and financial risk tolerance. The CFO provides direction and leadership for the senior leadership team, directly supervises the finance office staff, leads strategic financial initiatives to maximize good stewardship, and assists with development of policies and ensures their implementation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Monitors monthly financial operations, prepares timely analysis and reports, and gives guidance to executive and operating staff. Works closely with operations staff on issues that affect financial outcome. Prepares specific recommendations for CEO;
- Leads and develops accounting/finance staff and oversees the operations of the accounting/finance department;
- Works directly with assigned committee(s) of the board, including Finance and Audit, to build volunteer relationships, develop policies, monitor their implementation and meet the related needs of the board;
- Actively engages volunteers in challenging conversation and decision making to advance impact;
- Manages operating cash flow, investments, and reserves to maximize earnings;
- Acts as a trusted advisor to the CEO; learns what is needed and how to provide it quickly and accurately;
- Improves processes while removing inefficiencies, teaching others, analyzing information, and projecting future positions to fill in gaps;
- Anticipates trends and their implications on organizational financial sustainability and seeks to develop strategies for mitigation/turn around;
- Develops performance indicators and measurement systems for tracking strategic plan objectives. Evaluates current business models and leads efforts to modify or redesign financial models where necessary;
- Oversees preparation of reports to granting agencies, YMCA of the USA, and governmental agencies. Oversees preparation of tax returns. Participates in obtaining grants;
- Oversees the development of the annual operating budget, including all branch/dept budgets. Works closely with operations staff to ensure that budgets are well-planned, realistic, and prepared in a timely manner;
- Reviews, updates, and/or develops internal control systems for the YMCA and oversees internal audits which checks for compliance on a variety of policies and standards. Provides recommendations for improvement;
- Oversees the annual audit and meets periodically with the outside auditors to maintain communications and keep them informed of changes in the YMCA;
- Evaluates and manages the annual renewal of association insurances;
- Ensures that current accounting standards are followed and legal requirements are met;
- Establishes, maintains and/or monitors all banking and financing records;
- Oversees investments, under the direction of the Finance Committee, and within the risk tolerance expressed by the Board via the asset allocation policy;
- Maintains good working relationships with auditors, bankers, investment counselors, attorneys and other professional advisors;
- Represents the YMCA with key community organizations and events as required.
- Adhere to policies related to boundaries with youth.
- Attend required abuse risk management training.
- Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
- Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
- Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
- Follow employees and volunteers screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk.
- Provide employees and volunteers with on-going supervision and training related to abuse risk management
- Ensure there is a positive culture for responding and reporting for employees and volunteers
- Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with youth.
- Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk and prevention.
- Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the YMCAs progressive discipline policy.
- Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
- Follow mandated reporting requirements.
- Communicate to all employees and volunteers the YMCAs commitment to zero tolerance of abuse to youth. Report essential abuse risk management information to the board of directors.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree in business, finance, accounting, or equivalent; MBA, CPA or CMA preferred.
- Five or more years of experience in accounting and financial management required; non-profit experience preferred.
- Personable with ability to teach staff to elevate the financial skills. Experienced in effectively leading and developing a staff team.
- Knowledge and understanding of general business matters required including financial analysis, budget development, financial reporting, cash management, business taxes, banking, and debt financing instruments.
- Ability to set priorities and manage multiple concurrent tasks with tight deadlines according to a defined set of best practices.
- Excellent oral, written and presentation skills necessary. Organizational problem-solving and creative and critical thinking are mandatory.
- Knowledge of computer systems, including experience with system selection, new system implementation and project management. Personal computer skills required.
