JOB SUMMARY

The Operations Director provides leadership, direction, and supervision to ensure best practices and high standards in animal care and community care at Petworks Animal Services. The Operations Director also strives to consistently meet or exceed the goals of Petworks Animal Services as set forth by the executive director along with the Board of Directors.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Executive Director. Works closely with the behavior and welfare manager, veterinarians, local and regional animal welfare organizations, and transfer partner agencies. Provides direct supervision to the customer service staff, animal care staff, and volunteers. Participates in the implementation of vendor contracts related to facility care and maintenance. Represents Petworks on local and regional coalitions as assigned or approved by the Executive Director.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Operations

1. Oversees daily operations of Petworks facilities and creates staff assignments to complete daily sanitation, animal care, and maintenance tasks in accordance with the ASV Guidelines (2022).
2. Collaborates with the Executive Director to plan, evaluate and revise the operations budget.
3. Oversees maintenance of Petworks facilities, grounds, vehicles, equipment, and provision of supplies.

Program Development

1. Creates, implements, and manages the adoptions program.
2. Creates SOPs based on current best practices for animal transport and oversees transport program.
3. Creates a volunteer program that supports the shelter and shelter animals and recruits, trains, schedules, and manages volunteers.
4. Recruits and trains fosters for Petworks' animals and serves as point of contact between fosters and shelter staff.
5. Creates additional community-focused programs and manages projects that build positive relationships between Petworks and community members.

Daily Care

1. Creates work schedule for front desk, adoptions, and daily care staff.
2. Supervises daily care staff and provides onboarding, training, and regular reviews of staff performance.
3. Develops SOPs relating to animal care, sanitation, disease prevention, safety, and pathway planning in collaboration with the Behavior and Welfare Director.

Veterinary Care

1. Collaborates with the supervising veterinarian to ensure timely and humane veterinary care is provided to animals across the shelter, from intake to outcome.
2. Liaises with external veterinary partners, agencies, and volunteers to improve animal outcomes and expand Petworks' impact on animal health and welfare.
3. Performs humane euthanasia as a Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician (CAET) according to Petworks' policies when a live outcome is not possible, safe, or humane.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1. Must have a high school diploma or GED.
2. An associate's degree or higher degree in management or a related field is preferred. Related supervisory experience considered.
3. Animal sheltering experience is required. Additional adjacent experience, including veterinary care, animal training, or other non-profit experience is strongly preferred.
4. Must have a valid Tennessee driver's license and a clean driving history.
5. A commitment to humane and low-stress animal handling and care is required.
6. Compassionate and professional communication skills are required for in-person, telephone and online communications with staff, volunteers, other agencies, and community members.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

1. Must perform a variety of tasks including sitting and standing, lifting up to 50 pounds repetitively, typing, writing, answering phones, and filing.
2. Written and verbal English proficiency required. Applicants with Spanish proficiency encouraged to apply.
3. Must be able to handle animals. Must work safely around unruly, vicious, sick, injured, dangerous, or deceased animals, chemical compounds (e.g., bleach, disinfectants, medications), and understand there is a risk of exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.
4. Must work when and where needed by the organization. Must be willing to work irregular hours, weekends, holidays, and additional hours when necessary. Must be flexible with schedule changes and short notice requests.
5. Work can occur in an office setting, animal areas, on the grounds of the shelter facility, office building, or off-site. Must be able to work in an environment with elevated noise levels.
6. Must work under pressure with public audience and have patience and tact when working with difficult or emotional people and situations.
7. Must perform a variety of tasks in all weather conditions, including standing, kneeling, walking, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
8. Must not have an allergic condition that prevents the employee from performing any essential function of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
