Job Summary

The ETSU College of Nursing, Office of Practice, is seeking to fill a PRN Billing/Collections Specialist position.

The Billing/Collections Specialist processes and posts insurance/patient payments and generates billing statements. The level of responsibility and compensation will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and qualifications.

Billing and Collections II, Level 8

• Reviews charges for correct coding and forwards to Billing Company.
• Ensures we are providing required documentation for participation in third party payment incentive programs.
• Processes and posts all payment types in the electronic practice management/health records system.
• Generates and mails billing statements from the electronic practice management/health records system.
• Answers telephone and in-person inquiries regarding explanation of benefit documents for, charges, payments and adjustments and amounts due.
• Ensures accuracy of information in the electronic practice management/health records system.
• Trains and supervises student workers.
• Identifies coding irregularities within electronic practice management/health records system.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Billing & Collections Specialist I, Level 7

• Processes and posts insurance payment in the electronic practice management/health records system.
• Processes and posts patient payments in the electronic practice management/health records system.
• Answers telephone and person inquiries and/or routes to appropriate personnel.
• Trains and supervises student workers.
• Identifies coding irregularities within electronic practice management/health records system.
• Provides training related to coding errors.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Billing and Collections II, Level 8

• Knowledge of the medical billing and collections revenue cycle and ability to recognize data trends and recommend adjustments and implement appropriate changes to our processes
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to align tasks and responsibilities with appropriate team members
• Knowledge of insurance and medical billing.
• Knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid billing regulations.
• Knowledge of coding for claims, coding certification.
• Knowledge of HIPAA Privacy and Security.
• Efficient with Microsoft Office programs, specifically Excel.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
• Ability to solve problems and work with a team.

Billing & Collections Specialist I, Level 7

• Knowledge of insurance and medical billing.
• Knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid billing regulations.
• Knowledge of coding for claims, coding certification.

Required Qualifications

Billing & Collections Specialist II, Level 8

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three (3) to four (4) years experience medical office billing and coding.
• Three (3) years of experience with electronic health records (EMP/HER) system.
• Three (3) years experience with insurance claims processing.

Billing & Collections Specialist, Level 7

• High school diploma or equivalent
• One (1) to two (2) years of experience medical office billing and coding.
• One (1) year of billing functions on electronic health records (EPM/EHR) system.
• One (1) year of experience with insurance claims processing.

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Professional Coding (CPC) Certification or Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) certification.
